Intake manifold

I did a search on this but nothing came up. I was wondering if I could swap my air intake manifold with on from a newer mustang. Some one told me that the newer intake designs allow for better air flow and more hp. I was also thinking about taking my intake manifold off and cleaning it my next day off. Im not exactly sure what to expect but any helpful hints would be great on how to clean it up. Thanks.

If you mean going from your planning to use a 99+ Mustang intake, you'll need more than just the intake. The 3.8 that you have is a singleport and the 99+ 3.8 is a Split port. I'm not sure on the differences and what parts you would all need, but talk to racecougar. He has a Splitport V6 in a 94 T-Bird.

You'll need the split port heads, lower intake, and upper intake, along with the throttle body and throttle linkage. Also, since you have an AOD tranny you'll need to make some sort of custom TV cable to allow for correct length and to not kill your tranny. Along with a custom bracket to bolt to the throttle body. Not sure if the stang split ports have IMRC's but if they do you'd need an RPM activated switch to operate them. Or just rip them out.

What should I clean the inside of the upper intake manifold with? Any special cleaners?

Brake cleaner would probably work best, or you could just keep it on the car and run some sea foam through it. I swear that stuff is god's gift to car enthusiasts.

how do i "polish" the inside of my intake? Will this increase my hp?

you need to buy a dye grinder and get a collection of different porting and polishing bits and attachments. it gets quite expensive. You'd also have to cut the intake manifold in half in order to port the inside of it and the runners.

cut my intake in half? Which one, my upper or lower? Sorry about the questions but im new to the whole thing

Sounds like this guy is probably asking for more of a definition. Genrally, when people talk about porting and polishing (or PnP) they are talking about port matching, which is when you make sure that the openings (lets say the heads and lower intake) match up so as to create less turbulance in the air. Sometimes you can reach in a little farther and clean up restrictions just past the openings.

Well right now im just wanting to clean it. So the brake cleaner wont hurt the engine if it gets in it? Could I clean the lower intake without removing it or do i need to take it out? Thanks for the input.

if you run seafoam through the intakes it will deffinetely clean them out, as well as the heads, combustion chambers, and exhaust. I'd just use the soafoam. But now that I think about it, if you really want to take it off and clean it use carb cleaner, it's probably designed to clean carbon build up better.

To PnP the upper to it's full capabilities of porting, you must cut it. The lower can be PnP without cutting it. I wouldn't do anything more than port match the heads unless you get it professionally done.

Here's a picture of what cutting the upper looks like. Ignore the colored lines, they were put there to give directions to someone else for cutting the runners shorter for more top end power.



This view is looking from the air pocket in the upper manifold (part below the 3.8 script) out to the throttle body inlet and down the runners that lead to the lower manifold.

Ok, Monday im going to pull my upper intake off and clean it out along with my egr, throttle body, and iac. Should i also remove my lower intake? If do this do I have replace my intake gaskets or can i use the old ones. Also to remove the lower intake, I have to pull the fuel rail off so should i do anyhting to the injectors while their off?

Also, if I pull off the lower intake; should I go ahead and pull the heads to make sure they are good? If they are still good, are the head gaskets reusable?

Your heads are almost asuredly fine. I don't believe that you can reuse the headgaskets, at least I don't see any point to it. And you will not be able to reuse the headbolts once they are loosened.

No re-using head gaskets. A big no-no!

Sometimes, if you're careful pulling the heads off, you can reuse the gaskets. But I wouldn't even take the heads off if the gaskets aren't giving you any trouble to start with. Why fix something that isn't broken.

Some cars go without blowing one their entire life. I say if you're not having symptons of gaskets going, ie: loosing coolant, oil, then don't worry about it. Just my opinion.

i know some are lucky , i have a friend who just turned 300,000 with original head gaskets.

If he's got the time and a little bit of extra cash, go ahead and do the head gaskets, the newer the gaskets are, generally the chances of them blowing is reduced quite a bit. I mean, sure the heads are a PITA, but still do-able. As for the headbolts, I know you're supposed to replace them but when I did all of my major engine mods, we re-used the head bolts with the P&P heads... *shrugs*

Geez Spike, no new push rods and re-used bolts? I'm beginning to see why your motor siezed

To do a proper job of the head gaskets you can not reuse the head gaskets. Reusing the bolts is almost as bad an idea as reusing the head gaskets, they will not be able to maintain the torque load evenly on the heads.

Which means coolant (or water in spikes case ) can leak into the block and hydro lock the motor siezing it. Hey Spike, I think I figured it out. Makes total sense.
