Confused about egr

I need to replace my egr vavle. But, it seems like one group of people is telling me that you dont need it and that all it does is throw carbon back into your intake dirtying it up. Then I was reading something about another person who had damaged their engine by removing it. What gives? Do I really need it?

Yes you need it. If it is gone then it will mess up your engine. If you get a chip you can delete it safely, otherwise, replace the valve.

The EGR is exhaust gas recirculation. And since gas is just carbon monoxide. so carbon does build up in the engine. I used to just put seafoam through the intakes every 40k miles or so.
