Need new Alternator

So I need a new alternator. This question is about the belt. I want to put out the most amps possible. The 100 volt is used with an 8 groove belt. Could I maybe swap pullies? Just a thought.

Everyday of my life is a constant fight, between wrong and right.

Roy,

Uh... it is a 12 volt alternator.

I think you have to give us a few more details here. Are you looking to go to a 130 Amp alternator?

Pullies can be swapped. You could put an underdrive pully on to gain some HP, but you may not want to do that if you need more power for radio, amps, speakers that turn you brain into mush...

roy, you can use a 130 amp out of 94+ models. if you want more amps, i wouldn't recommend getting an underdrive pulley set. i have upgraded to this alternator, and i also have and underdrive crank pulley, and i still see the needle drop at night when my lights and other items are on and i am stopped. i also have a bxt65850 battery, which puts out 900cca, and 1000 ca. guess the alt. isn't big enough for all my electrical equipment!!! you can get a used 130 smpalt for about $50.

So if I want to get a new alt that is larger then 130 amp, what do I need to do to make it work? Is it as simple as replacing the old one or what? Thanks for the help.

93 LX. What electrical equipment do you have? I only have some fog lights. I should be ok... I am not into largge stero stuff. Thanks for the info on the 93+ MN12 alt.

lets see: 80/100 lights, factory driving lights with brighter bulbs, underdrive pulley, 4 blaupunkt 240w 5x7's, blaupunkt 200w head unit, 180w rear box... normally everything works ok. it's just when i'm at idle with the lights on, and say the heat on. or heat on and rear defroster on. or really any combination of the above. i suppose that if i stuck with normal 9005/9006 bulbs, there wouldn't be a problem, but then i couldn't see!!! i also have a wiring harness for those bulbs from www.suvlights.com that comes with relays to absorb some of the power...guess not!!! LOL

you just need the alternator and a little wire splicing work, and you will be all set.

Crazed Maniac, (Gee, that's what I felt like being deprived of my T-Bird for 4 days.)

A 130 amp alternator is the biggest that came OEM from the factory in a T-Bird or Cougar.

To go bigger, you either have to find a unit that uses the same mounting points and you can wire in to the existing harness as 93LX said, OR you can find a shop that works on alternators which can swap out the guts of your existing alternator and put in what you want/need.

I had my alternator rebuilt because the bearings were going out of it. It was cheaper to rebuild now than to buy a new unit later.

What would you guys think I should get? I have an 89 ls with almost power everything. Sometime in the spring I will be installing two 10 inch pioneer subs powered by a pioneer 760 watt amp and a 1 farad cap. I still have the stock alt right now, maybe I should just get this one rewound? I still have time to choose which to do. I am new around here but have been finding my way around.

CM,

These are what stock Ford alternators that were installed in our cars. They are interchangeable:

89-93 v6: 75 amp
89-93 sc: 110 amp
94-97 v6, sc & v8: 130 amp

That's courtesy of a previous post by 93lx.

My advice is to ask how much power you are going to need from your alternator. Not being into the extra audio stuff, I can't say.

I would think getting a V-8's alternator or one from a 94 to 97 from a Bird or Cougar would be my first try. I'm not sure what they go for used.

Hey, 93LX, I gave you credit. Why reinvent the wheel?

I used to work with a guy in CT that had an Olds 442. He put aircraft landing lights on the front for "fog lights". In reality, they were punishment lights for cutting him off or other offenses. He did have a power problem in that he had to have the engine in high rev to be able to power the lights.
