ticking sound

96 xr7 v6 57,000 miles

When engine is cold, quiet operation. After it warms up, I hear a ticking noise coming from the rear of the engine. It is more pronounced with the hood closed, then when open.

Any ideas?

first of all, the injectors on the v6's are pretty loud. But if it's something else, it could be a lot of things. First thing I'd do is buy a few cans of Sea Foam. Run one through the oil and the other through the main vacuum hose on the upper manifold. Also, an easy thing to check is the rocker torque. Tear the engine down to the valve covers and torque the rockers on the base circle to 22ft/lbs. If that doesn't fix the problem is could be lifter tick or piston slap. But I'd lean more towards lifter tick.
