Are the 96/97 headers really all that great?

I got around to looking at mine yesterday and I was shocked at how the collector was so darn small! The tubing going to the collector seems decent enough but the drivers side especially just plains sucks.

I had compared them to a set of stock 4.2L F-150 cast iron headers I have and the tbird collectrs fit inside the 4.2's!!

I even tried to see if a 2-1/4 pipe is able to be made to fit and its a no go,, it way to big,, looks like a 2" pipe would be max.

I was gonna spend the money to get these jet hot coated but now I'm unsure of what route I wanna take.

Does anyone make longtubes for our 3.8/4.2 cars?? I know Kooks makes a shorty but at $600+ it should come with atleast a matching H-Pipe or something.

Has anyone tried the mustang headers? long tubes or shorties and gotten them to work?

mustang headers can be made to work, with a little steering shaft modification. IIRC.

They can also be made to fit if you pound in the side of the drivers side collector a little to clear the steering shaft.

My money would be on doing the steering modification that 392Bird has done, because from what I can see, you would get quite a bit more feedback through the wheel with that.

I went with 2000 Mustang headers on my splitport. I heated and bent the drivers side collector to clear the steering shaft.

the 96-98 mustang shorties are just as bad as the 96-97 mn12's. I ported mine out to a 2-1/4" collector and ported the primary inlets too, I think they flow well but there's no way to really tell the difference. But they can be ported and flow much better. One things for sure and thats that they're better than the earlier style manifold, ported or not.

Dude,
Keep in mind these things are for a 3.8 not a 5.0. A lot less CI's or liters if you will. It is too easy to over exhaust a motor and kill bottom end power.

My bro's car just has ported heads/Intakes and roller 1.8's alomg with the dual flow exhaust and top end this thing pulls hard. Unless you plan on some major power adders, just clean them up around the flanges and your good to go.

Ive decided to try and squeeze a set opf mustang longtubes in there,, along with the steering mod conversion.

I bet it will work, though the cost of jointing the shaft costs just about as much as the headers do and you could get kooks for 100 more than that, but i'm still sure it would work from the fitment pics Ive seen.

I agree thomas,, but arent the Kooks only a mid-length header? was looking for something of more a true long tube design.

Although,, going with a MAC header Vs. kooks will probably bite me in the arse. I believe MAC is the only comany making long tubes for mustang v6??

Its still up in the air for now.

They make both. Here's a pic of the long tubes. And yes, MAC is the only company who makes long tubes for the v6. But the MAC's have a smaller primary tube than the Kooks so those might be better for NA applications.
