Iac

Well I tried another IAC today. The cars been starting rough and getting terrible mileage, as well as hunting while idling between 400 and 800 rpms. So I put this one on and the car started great. But now it idles at 1200-1400 in park and close to 1000 in gear. Is this one bad too? Or is there something else that could be faulty as well?

Is it a new IAC or a junkyard piece? I had problems with my IAC and I tried to clean it out and it did the same thing. The car would rev real high in idle and then in gear it wouldn't drop under 1000. Turned out that it was just stuck and it was time for a new one. So, yes the second one might be bad too.

It was a junkyard piece. I think I got lucky with the new one I got today, looks almost brand new. Hopefully this will solve both the surging/crappy mileage, and the high idle.

Well high idle went away but the mileage still sucks, and still hard to start when cold.

Take a volt/ohm meter and mesure the resistance on the IAC it should be between 7-13 ohms....I thought mine was bad also and changed it same thing car had hard time starting and wouldnt hold idle for like 20 seconds...The problem with mine was a Coolent Temp. Sensor very easy and cheap to replace...Hope this helps you out..

Thanks jay. Ill give it a try when I get a chance. Only thing Im still wondering about is since I have one black plug, and the rest are almost perfect, would this be a sticking injector?

hmmm I also had the same problem in the summer hard starting we did a fuel injector clean and tested and num 5&6 failed so changed them and the fuel pressure regulator<-----another cause of hard starting so check ur fuel pressure tooo..

BLUE LS: didnt we talk awhile back about your FP regulator being bad? did you ever change that?? Hard starting, bad gas mileage and rough running are all signs of that.

Yep, I replaced that with a new unit a while ago. Seemed better for a while, but the same problems came back up.

hmmm must not be that then....lol I would check the Coolent temp sensor since it cost like nothing .........just my thoughts tho......good luck

you might want to check it again just to make sure it aint leaking,, if its a cheap autozone replacement then I've seen em go bad fast. simply hook a hose up to it and suck on it and see if gas comes out,, or just pull the hose with the car running and see if there is a residual of gas in the line.

Also,, find you Temp sensor (for the computer not the gauge) and unplug it and restart the car and see if it gets better. I had numerous time these went bad and caused the car to just go nuts.

I checked the FPR already, that was my first thought when it didnt change anything, I stay away from the cheap POS replacements since a not-so-pleasnt experience with certain reman starters. The sensor I want is the one attached to the pipe with the yellow disc on top right?

yep thats the one it has one plug on it and the sensor just screws right in on top..

OK well I unplugged the coolant sensor and the car fired right up. But the CEL light came on (excpected this) and when I hit the gas the car sounded like it was about to die (doesnt usually do this while driving with it connected, only at startup)

your car is non mass air? or mass air?

did the car start better with the snsor unplugged? if so it might be time for a sensor replacement.

Remember, every time you replace a sensor its good practice to reset the computer by taking the battery terminal off for 5 mins and then replace and start the car and allow it get to operating temp before touching anything.

Non-mass air. It seemed to start better with the sensor unplugged, but once it started it ran like total crap.

Thanks for the help guys. I think changing the sensor solved it, the car sat all day and fired up no prob and with no hesitation starting off. Ill know for sure tomorrow morning. Heres hoping.

Also I looked at the old IAC I took off before I tossed it and I cracked one of the fins while I was cleaning it oops. Strange thing is with the broken one on I lost use of the blower for the heat. Seems odd one would affect the other.
