Power Loss

I have a 1997 Thunderbird V 3.8L with 120,000 miles. I have been having trouble with it for some time now. To begin with, the car would sometimes stall when I stop at a red light or shift from reverse to drive, I have poor power at low RPM's, and the emissions smell awful. I took it to 3 mechanics and they all told me that the O2 sensors needed to be changed.

Once they were changed, I started to have a new problem. I push the gas pedal about half way down and get little to no response. I have barely any power between 1000-2000 RPM. Once I am on the highway at 3000 RPM, the car runs OK. Finally, I am getting horrible gas milage out of the car. Does anybody know what could be causing this.

(P.S. When I hook up the computer I get 11 Codes that also indicate "[email protected] Sensor Circuit Malfunction" for all of them)

I'd look at your Cats, they may be failling.

If all else fails get a bigger hammer!

The power loss could be a bad TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) it's located on the backside of your throttle body, a little black sensor. It's a potentiometer that tells the computer the degree at which the throttle blade is opened and adds fuel accordingly, BUT on the 4r70w 94-97 birds it also controls the transmission. When it goes bad it sends no voltage to the computer and this affects both the engine and transmission performance. You can test the voltage with a volt meter, the negative lead to the negative wire, and the positive lead to the sending wire. When my TPS went bad on my 95 v8 it also through o2 sensor codes, so Id check out the TPS.

Bad smell from exhaust probably is a bad cat, not necessarily a clogged one. When the cats get old they give a sulfuric smell like rotten eggs.

yeah, i would agree with thomas. i just went through a similar problem with my t-bird. i'm still not done with all the **** thats happened with it yet. there will be a long post with pictures in a couple of weeks....i would also recommend checking all your vacum lines, and cleaning your MAF. neither may be the problem. but never hurts, and can be a very beneficial
