Water Pump Removal

I'm in the process of replacing the water pump on my 96 3.8. I have every bolt off the water pump, but now it is stuck on that black metal tube on the top of the water pump. Is that tube just suppose to slide out? I cannot get it to move at all. How does it come off? I almost want to cut that tube and reassemble it with a rubber hose.

there is a small retaining bolt holding that metal tube on... make sure that is removed...

if there is nothing holding it on, then it SHOULD just come of with some twisting and/or wiggling...

I did remove the bolt. It is weird because coolant is leaking from where the tube connects to the water pump, but it still won't budge. I guess I will have to just pull on it even more. Did anyone have to remove the entire metal tube from the rubber hoses it connects to before getting the water pump out?

Hi FastThunder. I'm having a problem with the same metal pipe you are... but by problem is just the opposite... I cant get it back in all of the way!! I'm getting a small leak there also.

I did not have to disconnect the hose to get the pipe off though, but if it'll give you more leverage, go for it.

You may want to consider new o-rings for that pipe- it needs two (if it's the same setup as mine). One in the middle of the pipe, and another at the very top.

Let me know how you make out getting the pipe back in. I worked on it half the day on Saturday and I still cant get the darn thing back in all of the way.

I just got that pipe in, all I had to do was lube it up. It did require a little bit of force to get it in place though.

this must be a 94+ thing because I have no idea what this tube is that you guys speak of.

yea im with you thomas i have an 89 and i just replaced the water pump last week and i have no pipe in that location either. but if you do have the new pump just tear the old pump to sh-- getting it out...(joke but not really)

I too just changed the water pump in my 93 and had two rubber hoses running out the top of my pump, no pipe.

What a pain though. Do all 90's tbirds have that crappy bracket for the power steering pump on top of the water pump?

all 3.8's, 3.9's, and 4.2's have that from what I've seen. But I dont think it's that hard to remove, heck I have have my accessory brackets and water pump off in 10 minutes.

Yeah, once I figured out how to do it, it was easy. Took me about an hour to slap it all back together. I cringe at the thought of removing the powersteering pump pully though. That's what the instructions on autozone.com said to do. No thanks.

take off the power steeering pump pulley? that's crazy, you shouldn't have to take that off,

its way easier to just unbolt the entire accessory bracket and fan shroud (if you have one) and just move the bracket forward out of the way.

I had to do this a few years ago, with no knowledge and a friend just willing to help, If I remember right, the power steering pulls off for clearance and a bolt behind it. I could be wrong though. It wasn't too hard. Glad I did it there though. The old pump was just about shot.

thats what i had to do was pull the pully off to get to the 2 nuts behimd it to get the bracket off it wasnt too hard with the pully remover took all of 2 mins. its just all the other crap you have to remove to get to it.

i used the tool i bought from autozone its about 20 bucks and u can get it from any parts store.
