I smell something burning, help!!!

While driving my car i smell something burning, almost like rubber. it dark so we couldn't see much but we noticed that the tensioner wasn't spinning, and the smell seemed to be coming from there.

we changed the tensioner and now it spins, but now my battery is dead. i have a battery charger and it started the car, then it ran dead again after shut the car off and tried to start it. could it possible be the alternator? any ideas? if so please let me know if this is an at home job. thanks for any replies

Alternator

Could be your alternator is the source of the burning smell?

Pull it and have it load tested, then go from there.

I would guess it is the belt that you smelled burning on the not turning tensioner. If the belt was slipping, your alternator was probably not moving like it was suppose to. I would replace the belt, charge the battery, and go down the road.
