Transmission problem? or TC?

Ok, gotta know, whats the best, most accurate way to tell if I need a transmission? or just a TC?

I'm getting a sporadic flashing O/D light, (usually in second, but not consistent)
I swear sometimes I can smell that horrid burning smell when I get out of the car (sometimes.. but then, I'm so worried about it I wonder if its just psycho-symatic lol)

And should I need a transmission, whats the easiest swap? I have options of a Mark Tranny (and TC), or a newer Mustang transmission (but I don't want to buy a speedcal).

Way the price difference in finding a buying a used or rebuilt tranny to just taking the car to a local tranny shop and having it done there. Time and expense verses convenience.

1995 Lincoln Town Car Signature Series - 200k!
1994 Mercoury Cougar XR7 - 150k and still going.

I've had too many other cars to mention...

I can do the work myself, not a problem. (won't be the first time)

Item 1 is to make sure of what the problem is. I have to find someone in this little town who has a diagnostic reader that reads the tranny codes. That should help me know just what the problem is. At this point it could still be minor.
