mercon 6 ?

can mercon v be used in the 4R70W trans.it is supposed to be more of a synthetic oil. or are the friction characteristics wrong for this trans. thanks! --irv

Dexron is a GM product. Don't you dare put that in a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicle. That's sacrilegious.

There is no such animal as Mercon 6.

Use Mercon V and call it a day.

mercon v = different/better friction modifiers. not necessarily synthetic.

properties of mercon v.mechanics around here use it w/good results.

It doesn't work as well as Mercon V IMHO, my trans started shuddering worse using it.

Dr. Tranny's instant shudder fix helped quite a bit, but again not as much as Mercon V.

what about the fluid that is labled "dex/merc" on the bottle? I have never used it...but I do have a case of the stuff in my garage...not that I'd put it in my trans...just curious....

What about Royal Purple ATF? I'm wanting to switch all of my fluids over to RP products, so far my car is only running RP 10W30.

I've been wondering about the trans fluid and if it's worth putting in the trans. (hopefully to be j-modded)

Rest In Peace Mom.

because for the most part dexron III and mercon are essentially the same. in a way they are the companies' own versions of the same basic thing. overall the friction modifiers are interchangeable. dexron VI, mercon V and ATF+4 are NOT interchangeable, the friction modifiers work in very different ways.

A friend of mine with a 100k mile Subaru complained of differential whine the whole time the RP was in the car (about 6 months), upon replacing with Motul it fell silent again.

Hmmm interesting I wonder what it with the RP that causes the problem. Have always heard good things about the product /pricey as well

i wouldnt put RP fluid in my trans, but your can run the oil, and maybe the 90w in the diff, might still need the additive for the trac-lock though, not sure. prolly why the subaru was making noise as well, not ure how they set up their Diffs, but if its like a clutch type trac-lock without the friction additive... good luck...

mercV works great in the 4r70w, but if you put any Dex in their it will have shudder and/or explode later. dex/merc stuff is fine, but i would still go Merc if you can. stay away from RP and go with the Merc the trans was made for -_-

I'm actually quite surprised to hear that about the trans fluid. The engine oil has been nothing but awesome, and I flat out refuse to run anything else as far as engine oil goes.

I don't think I have a trac-loc on my 97, so I could probably run RP in the diff.
I could be wrong here, but I think they have 2 formulas for trac-loc or not..... I could be thinking of something else though.

Rest In Peace Mom.

To run rp in a trac loc you will prolly need an limited slip additive put it in first! easier. Also about rp its just too expensive to be nothing special. Before the rise of synthetic oil rp was great now its just another synthetic oil. If you like it run it and you can say I run rp but theres really nothing to it imho

I got the Valvoline Maxlife synthetic Mercon V. It eliminated my transmission fluid leak and made it shift 5x better.

I've been running Dexron VI in mine for a few years. I wanted to go full synthetic so I gave it a chance. It shifts much better than it did with Dexron/Mercon III. It used to be very harsh and sometimes shudder with Dexron III. The shifting is very firm now and I'm very happy with the results. Maybe the fact the I drive both Ford and GM, I wasn't against using a GM fluid.

When I bought the Dexron VI I couldn't find synthetic Mercon V anywhere. The Castrol Atf Dexron VI was $7.50 a quart when I bought it. 14 quarts @ $7.50 a quart, wow that really adds up.

I just got a case of Motorcraft Mercon V for $3.79 per quart at my local dealer. They price matched the O'Reilly Auto parts price for Castrol Merc V.
