Grand Marquis transmission?

I was looking at an 01-02 Grand Marquis transmission to throw into my 4.6L 95 Cougar as my transmission is dying.

I looked on car-part.com and found a few in my area but they have 3 codes listed. I checked ebay and they list some of them as being for the Grand Marquis/ CV PI. I remember reading the PI transmission wouldnt work because it is to long.

My question is this. If I get one from car-part do I need the code 1W7P-AA, 1W7P-BA, or 1W7P-DA?

Thanks for any help.

Nevermind...I must have mistyped something in the search when I originally tried it.

Search my posts; it's all in there.

I started from scratch on these cars ~8 years ago.

A service manual comes in really handy, btw.

The GM tranny swap is pretty easy; doing the jmod is tougher. I bought a kit for mine from Alan last time.

Clean is very important when you're working on the tranny.

I found lint-free (tshirt type) rags, you really don't want to get anything in there while you have it apart.

A thread from a red shop rag can cause a rebuild.

Thanks for the advice.

I actually ordered the service manual for my Cougar the night before I picked up the car. I have been around cars all my life but this was my first Cougar (or Ford for that matter).

I will be ordering the jmod kit also. Im not steady with a drill so Im playing it safe.

Search my posts; I went back thru when I found out the answer to stuff, and updated the posts.

Mostly so I can find it the next time I have to do it...

Searching "+transmission +gran*marquis" finds some good posts:

Print master486's post, and tape it up in a good spot. I added some stuff I learned further down.

This one describes an issue you may notice; a tune fixes it.

This is good:

This was my first swap:

At this point, I had only changed the fluid in a transmission before, lol.

Some other things:

If the bad transmission is full of stuff when you drop the pan:
- Heavily flush the tranny cooler in the radiator, and all the lines.
- Don't reuse your old Torque converter. Use the one with the new tranny, or buy one.
- Inspect the drive shaft. If you have had vibration problems, Search my vibration threads, it may be what killed your tranny.
- Add a large cooler; I bought a really great one from DirtyD0g for a good price.

I'm glad I looked thru the search list, I also found a nice flame war I'd missed, lol...
