Exclamation trans fluid change

i had my tranny rebuilt a couple years back. i installed it and it took about 14qts of tranny fluid to fill up.
when i drain the fluid out of the pan i get about 1gallon of fluid out of it.
i heard about draining theTC, but, i've seen that the only way to get all the fluid out is to have it flushed out at a shop or the dealer.

2 problems, i live in the middle of the desert and the only shop with the equipment to do the flush is a fletchers, i like the price (a little over $100)but when i asked one of the workers what kind of fluid they use, he gave me some crap "we put what it needs" and when i asked him "and what exactly is that" he got bent out of shape and called the manager and he gave me another load of crap, he said "we have a synthetic fluid thats compatible with any fluid type"

the other option is the dealer but at over $500 price tag i think is too much.

is there any way to completely and safely flush the tranny yourself?

I would not do the flush. You will get about 6 more quarts out draining the converter. I only to the pan drop with converter drain and refill.

There should be a plug in your converter unless somehow you got one without a plug. Just turn it over with a wrench on the crank bolt until you see it come around, or feel it, where you removed the rubber plug.

There is a tech article floating around somewhere that explains step by step how to drain all the fluid out of a 4R70W.

You start by removing the line at the radiator and run the car until that is empty. Then drain the TC, and finally the pan, which shouldn't have much left at that point.

12 qts of Advance Mercon V will do the trick.

wouldn't it hurt the tranny to run it till its dry?

i would be nervous to do it like that cause i thouhgt it might hurt something, but i might be wrong

Dont do the flush! Completely useless on these cars they use a merc v "synthetic modifier" which is bottom dollar dex with a little bottle of modifier to "make" it merc v. Its like shooting a deer to make it heavier itll work but it will kill the deer. Best analogy a georgia boy can come up with. Anyway you can run it out like that with the car running the tranny will pump itself dry but I would drain it. Drop the pan and do a filter change while your at it might as well. Someone will probably chime in on the safety of running the car to drain the fluid. Ive done it but im not 100% on the ramifications on doing it with a 4.6. Hope this helps a little!

I would not do it. Not worth the chance. Also, why loosen leak free lines. Unless you have something bad wrong with your fluid, getting 10 of 12 quarts out is sufficient. Do it again in a year.

Actually *ahem* at http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny/flushing.html they recommend running it UNTIL it slows or starts to spit, and then shutting it off IMMEDIATELY.

Then you drain the TQ.

Then you drop the pan.

Or you can start with draining the TQ - but it'll take longer to drain, plus it'll drain a lot more.

I'd highly recommend that article.

I never said "dry", but I did say to refer to that tech article!

If you dont drain from the radiator line, be ready to deal with a full pan of fluid when you take it off, wear a red shirt! IIRC, they dont have a drain plug.

if i could take 10 to 12 qts out i'll be happy. i've been researching and heard that flushing it loosens the junk inside your tranny and sometimes makes more problems. thanks!

never said you did, just got nervous cause i never done this before.

i'll have to go shopping for red shirts before i do my car's blood trans.
