the dumbing of rpm while driving

1996 cougar

I'm suspecting this to be a transmission problem, if it is a problem at all. As I'm driving, say around or little over 2000 rpm, the rpm will drop to around 1500. If I lightly tap the brake pedal the rpm will jump back up again. I know of this happening in 3rd and 4th gear. Sometimes the drop in rpm will happen even when I give it a little gas for some giddy up, and even if I give it a little more it doesn't want to pick up, lightly tap the brake to kick the rpm back up to gain some speed. The transmission shifts into each gear fine though.

Anyone know what's going on? Any help will be appreciated ^_^.

Also I have had the transmission fluid replaced last year around 134-5K miles, full flush. Before that the booklet it came with shows fluid change at 90K miles. All maintenance shows to have been kept up with to 90K.. Anything between 90-128K is blank. She runs like a champ though .

Not enough info... usually shifts and torque converter lockup, which is what you may be seeing, are speed related.
And it's 'BRAKE' More than one instance usually isnt a typo.

Thank you for pointing that out, it has been corrected. No need to be a arrogant about it. Working on 4 days of no sleep and in a I don't give a flying f**k to correct spelling kinda mood. If my question is too vague I encouraging you to ask me some questions, and I would be more than happy to answer.

Meh.. I have a friend who is the same way. He means well, just a dick about it most the time. This is all off topic now, and I want no bad blood over a typo.

I've given you "ALL" the information I know. You want to know more ask me some questions.

So lock up engages around 45 mph at around 2000+rpm? Also did not know lock up engaged in 3rd gear as well.

No.. NOW you've given us the info. Answer is: Yes, locks up at 43-45 mph {near as I can tell} cruise. That is a feathered throttle.

Your intention, on top of being a dick, is to wake people from their ignorance with insults.. whether it be blunt or somewhat subtle. I'll admit the typo was ignorant on my part, but I'll be sure to pay attention next time around. So in a way you helped me... There is the means well.

Happy hour.. Great analogy, except I don't think people will be writing, or texting to each other during happy hour.. People usually talk by word of mouth ^_^ and when your talking it only matters the context in which the word is used... Is your fluid level correct? It sounds like normal torque converter locking/unlocking to me, my car does the same thing. Right around 65 km/h or so, if you go on and off the gas you can feel it un/locking.

It should be. I had it flushed last year with filter and gasket replacement.

It doesn't want to unlock sometimes though, and that's why I tap the brake pedal.

I kinda miss the throttle value cable on my old 88 honda ^_^;;

Your torque converter locks to make it to 100% efficiency, otherwise its slipping up to 90% of RPM difference until it locks the impeller to the converter case making it more of a direct drive than a fluid coupling.

And is that a throttle valve or value ?

From what I understand it is called a throttle value cable (tv cable for short). It is an adjustable cable linked to the transmission, and it controlled the timing of the shifting in the transmission.

I know what it is .. and its called a Throttle Valve cable. The cable moves a valve in the Valve body that adjusts your hydraulic pressure so throttle pressure overcomes governor pressure to force a downshift in the transmission. Hence the name Throttle Valve or TV cable.

Throttle value in % might be typical of an electronic Throttle positioning sensor like on the Throttle body (TPS sensor).
