Trans I.D.

Picked up a 4R70W trans & TC at my local Pick-ur-Parts off a '97 Mark for my '95.
When I brought it home I though I got a re-build from a '93 because of the markings.
I was under the impression that Ford's parts numbers starting with "F3", "F4","F5" meant that those parts were built in '93, '94. '95 respectively - So my question is, what year was this trans made with the following markings;
1. RF-F7AP-7006-AA on drivers side of trans case behind MLPS
2. RF-F3LP-7A040-AA on trans case
3. Basic 2
4. 42W on Ext. Shaft
5. Case 38 top of bell housing
6. 96 on top of trans case
7. the TC is 12"
8. has pan with sump & drain plug.
with this info, do I have a '97 Trans?

F3LP would be 03 must be one of the last with the 97 case. Does it have speedometer teeth?

F3 is 1993 (3W would be 2003). I thought the case changed between a 1993 and a 1997. The TC is 12 inches? measured how, or measured against the 11.25?

RF-F3LP-7A040-AA is the extension housing, which probably didn't change since 1993.

No model number like PKE or PKG?

Seems like there was some swapping around even if nothing more than the TC and flexplate. Best GUESS is a transmission and TC out of a 97 civilian Crown Vic or a Grand Marquis.

You're right, that would make it a service model unit. I was thinkign of the IL3P I see often.

1997 Crown Vic/Marquis/Lincoln Town Car 4.6L F7AP-AA -DA

Maybe it got changed before because a 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII should be 1996-97 Lincoln Mark VIII 4.6L F7LP-AA
The F7 refers to the 1997, the L refers to Lincoln division; you sure it doesn't say F7LP-7000-AA or F7LP-7006-AA (never seen 7006 either) ?

That's what the tranny came out of - here is a reference post:
http://forums.tccoa.com/showpost.php...9&postcount=10

BTW, Bangster is right, you can't go by the extension housing - you should be looking at that tag on the side, nothing in the case itself.

The case ID stayed the same for many many years it's an f7 case making the case 97 up.

Exactly what I mean by not going by any of the casing stampings - read the tag; this tag:

BTW, deciphering that tag is: F7 = 97, the 5 means a recreational vehicle (I picked a winner for an example, huh?), and the P for the fourth digit just means it's an automatic tranny (doh! - they all end in P lol)

Good post
Unfortunately without a tag id list from ford the rest of decoding is almost impossible.

Well, I made that list of ID numbers and what vehicles they came out of by LOTS of research on car-part and junk yards. I KNOW those numbers are pretty accurate (there may be a mistake or two that slipped by - I don't claim to be perfect). I SURE didn't see any recreational vehicles during my research - I just grabbed that pic off the net! lol

And as for deciphering Ford part numbers, I used this reference:
http://www.fordification.com/tech/pa...s_overview.htm

BTW, did you notice in that pic, that the close up isn't even the same tag it's pointing at? It's a 7T tag pointing at a 3N tag?!? What is that about?

Reason this Trans looked so good when I pulled it at junk yard is it may have been re-built - Tag is painted over same color as case.

Reason I mentioned TC size, I thought TC on a '97 was 11.25", but I measured this one across the face (center) from one end to the other - is that the way to measure it?

If it came out of the 1997 Mark VIII like you said, it's an 11.25" unless it's been changed. My old 12" is at the shop - Monday I can measure it for you unless someone here knows the answer right now!

Finally got paint removed from trans tag it shows:
PKE-P
F??P-7000-AA
??9842
With big 6P
I'll have to guess that the casing numer "RF-F7AP-7006-AA" mean that is off a Crown Vic, Marquis or Lincoln Town Car.
measured TC & it's 10.6 = 11.25"
I'll do the J-Mod on this & keep it on the ready now that I have solved my shifting problem with current trans
Thanks for all your help!
