94 trans clunking in 3rd

Just picked up a car that was sold here a few years ago from the non-member that bought it. I did some research and found the for sale ad on here so I am glad to bring it back to the forum. (btw I am from Sccoa, but I sold my 95 chameleon 5spd)

So the trans was reworked at 90k with all new accum, solenoids and such. Today with 144k when it hits 3rd gear it clunks and chugs like the car is out of gas trying to die. Slow down and it drops back to 2nd, runs perfect. 1/2 shift is perfect, grabs reverse perfect.

I have been checking out some newer lower mileage trans', but I want to make sure that it is in fact shot.

I am doing a tune-up this week to rule out MAF, plugs, wires and such. Anything else I should check on the trans?
