lower 1-2 spring

can I leave it out without doing a JMOD?
I am upgrading the 1-2 to the new style piston, have both springs...but was curious...can I leave out the lower 1-2 spring in a stock trans/valve body application?

if so,
will the shift be a little firmer without being bone-jarring?

back when I did my tranny, I left out the 1-2 bottom spring, and it had neck snapping shifts. Jerry told me of a mustang spring that mellowed it out greatly.
