4R70W - when did yours fail?

I have 102k miles on my Tbird now, radiator guy got water in the tranny cooler and caused the shudder. I have since flushed the tranny twice and added a seperate cooler, bypassing the one in the radiator. Now I only have a mild shudder in 3rd gear around 35 mph.

Anyway, I figure if my tranny is doomed to fail before too long anyways, I'll just leave it be until the tranny does fail. Then it will be a 98+ GT tranny.

Just wondering when everyone else's tranny failed (if it has yet). Thanks.

I'm at 179,500 miles, and the tranny is all original, and never been rebuilt.

Whoops, I take that back, the MLPS has been replaced.

Did the J-Mod (sep. plate, springs and accum's.) at around 130,000 and is still going strong.

mine's running on 135k original miles: mild shudder, fixed with mercV, very light slippage lately.

Although I now have a '97 XR7 with 77k and running strong, my previous auto was a '96 Lincoln Town used as a Limo. There was 304k on the original tranny when the car was stolen....still shifted like new...

about 87000k, I think, but this was with mercon 3 and no external tranny cooler, so i basicly doomed it to fail. It was expensive to replace, but the dennis reinhart trans was worth it.

89K right now, leaks, shudders, slips and misses.
And to think, allI di to this tranny was:
200 miles balls out road course
200+ 1/4mi pass
200+ waterbox burnouts
Countless freeway OD downshift pulls
doezens of drifts
6 reverse 180's
10+ miles at 145-150mph+
2 Auto X's
and I looked at it funny, once.

Mine JUST failed, at 108k and some change...

Never had the cooler or J-mod done. It did have the TC changed around 50k to fix shuddering... It just sat for about 2 years too, and I didnt change the fluid when I started driving again.

Guess I got the sorriest tranny ever then mine died about 45K miles then again about 65K miles and the last time @ 95K miles then I Decided Autos aren;t my thing and went 5-speed I guess running a power adder and numerous other things throug a reletively stick tranny is kinda a no-no heheheh Oh well It has all been very interesting and FUN to say the least

Lots of Stuff, but the important one is a "5-speed" 4.6L V8 (for sale)

My car was at 188,000 when I experienced a 3-4 shift problem. Trans started to run hot, but it never 'failed' (as in I couldn't drive it). I opted for a rebuild, since there was a number of excessively worn parts (before I learned a bit about the trans itself, the J-mod, and the Reinhart Automotive 4R70W). I'm at 210,600+ now.

just found out from my dad we had shuttering around 50k miles and had a full pump and refill and then another one of those around 80k then ford told us to not change it again.....does anyone know why they would say something like that? is it cuase of knocking all the crude lose and blocking the holes and chocking the tranny?

Mine has a little bit over 130k on it and the only thing that I have wrong is a 2-3 shudder when the tranny gets hot. Not to bad for a tranny that has seen a hard life.

My AODE looks like its gonna fit the 4R70 chart - the TCC failed at 100k, and even with the Transgo kit in there at 100k, I don't expect the rest will go beyond 150k, with no performance driving except on the *&@# entrance ramps around here.

my 94cv started to shudder at about 50k.changed the fluid and it went away.shudder returned the following spring.(i think my wife spinning the tires on an icy driveway may have something to do with it.)have changed the fluid annually since, and added a cooler and an "electronic shudder fixer" at 75k.now have over 200k on it with no repairs, despite hauling a 1500 trailer on a regular basis.not as much fun as my previous car, a mkviii, but reasonably fun with suspession upgrades, and very reliable

LMFAO... Which time! So far mine has failed three times:

First at 112K (previous owner, "Mr. Transmission" rebuild)
Second at 125K (previous owner, let the same "Mr. Transmission" rebuild it again)
Third at 165K (I had it rebuilt with J-Mod, Mk-VIII TC, Late Valve Body, cooler, new radiator (had a small leak anyway), etc.)

I'm now at 235K miles and it's still running strong (just wants to go into neutral about once a month while I'm under load between 60 and 70 mph)

Moral of this story: Get the transmission built by someone that knows the 4R70W!!

factory one died @ 29000 miles ford replaced under warranty didn't flush cooler replacement went @ 58000 I bought an Art Carr tranny and it's got 198K on it with regular fluid/filter changes and never has missed a beat (its had it's share of 1/4 mile and road course racing over the years).
Ps have the biggest cooler you ever seen infront of the radiator.

95 Bird has 151xxx miles on it. Runs great. No shudders, no slippage, nice firm shifts(if you can call factory shifts firm), no leakage. Overall it runs great.

Tranny is totally stock - no J-Mod, no cooler, does run Mercon-V, though.(And a Dennis chip should be arriving Thursday or Friday..wooo!).

and who says the 95 trannies are weak?

15,000 miles on it and it just went out... Ford remanufactured... but I think it's cuz the tranny cooler didn't get flushed enough or the filter wasn't changed... Taking it in for warranty replacement...

Failed at 64k, intermediate one way clutch fragged during normal commuting. When I took the tranny out, it had a "reman" sticker on it, so that would make it 3 trannys so far. Always wondered why when I did the full jerry mod it had a non-94 valve body in it...
