Should I use my old tranny?

So a little while back I bought a 97 mustang from a guy I know, and like most great deals, it turned south. About 2 months after getting it, the transmission started slipping, barely moving when it was hot. Took it to the shop today, they say the direct clutch is pretty much shot. So it's either rebuild ($1800) or find a used one to put in for $300 + tranny.

I happen to have a 96 Cougar that I'm about ready to get rid of, that has a 95 transmission in it that was rebuilt about 5 years ago. I know the 95 isn't exactly the cream of the crop from the 4r70w's, but it drives fine, no problems. The rest of the car is going downhill fast though, and I don't have the time or money to keep it maintained like I want.

So I guess the question is, would it be worth it to swap the 95 tranny in, get the Mustang back on the road for $400 and part out what's left of the Cougar, or try to find a newer tranny from a junkyard that may or may not have been beat on, but is still a better starting point and swap that in? Money is the biggest issue for me right now, so I'm leaning towards the "use what I already have" direction, but I wanted some input from the rest of you.

The only reason to not use it if it is still in good working order would be the risk of killing the cooler circuit and converter should any internal components fail.

If the valve body in the 95 was modified to Jerry's specifications it's not really any worse off than the 97 trans/valve body.

I say swap it in. If you go junkyard digging for a preferred 99+ trans, you're going to be taking a risk anyway by not having it torn down and examined...
