transmission options

So my 3rd slips sometimes with od off just cruising. Wot or 40%+ throttle it dosent manage to slip but overdrive defently does weather its 5%-30% throttle. Cruising around or going up a hill it does manage to slip but i always take od off or give it a little more gas before it starts to slip to prevent it from slipping.

Cars been driving like this for 2-3 months noe softly and im wondering if replacing all the fluid throughout the converter and tra s and adding stop slip would solve this.

I added lucas stop slip a month ago and it did good up until last week.

However, i know eventually itll need r&r and im decided on going ahead and purchasing a second transmission. Rebuild the new one and drive the current one till it dies or blow it up to give me a reason to spend a day swapping them.

I did a little research and from my knowledge any of these will fit with no modifications..

Applications:
1993–1998 Lincoln Mark VIII
1993–2003 Ford F-Series
1994–1997 Ford Thunderbird
1995–1998 Lincoln Mark VIII
1995–2004 Ford Crown Victoria
1996–2001 Ford Explorer
1993–2004 Lincoln Town Car
1994–1997 Mercury Cougar
1995–2004 Mercury Grand Marquis
1997–2004 Ford Expedition
1997–2001 Mercury Mountaineer
1996–2004 Ford Mustang

Ive read alot that the mark 8 transmission are strongers and ive seen 1 at a local junkyard. They have 3 f150s in that year range, 2 mark 8's. 6-7 thunderbirds and cougars.

A few vic. 2-3 police interceptors. Almost everything on the list except the mountaineers are at my local 50$ all u can carry PnP.

Good start, but there's a little more research to be done.

Couple hints to get you started...

Police Interceptor transmissions have an extended tail shaft.
The EPC solenoid and MLPS needs to stay with the PCM programmed for it.
Later model transmissions switched from wires to a circuit board in the trans and would require a harness repin.
Any 4R70W not from a FN10 or MN12 has an 8 tooth output shaft.
93-95 are junk. 96-97 is better, still not the best choice. 98 is better. 99-04 is preferred.
Truck transmissions use a different valve body. Not desirable for car applications.

Yes, the only true plug and play transmissions for your car are going to be up to 95 4.6l Thunderbird or MKVIII. Everything else is going to need you to do at least something, starting with getting a correcting speedo gear and the right TCC solenoid. Anything 98 and newer is going to require swapping over your internal electronics.

Also write off all police or town cars due to the long tailshaft and any and everything 03 and newer as it might not have any teeth to drive that speedo gear.

I'd does NOT have an AODE in it, 93s used the 4R70w. You need to swap the TCC solonoid from your current transmission to the new one, resin the wiring harness connector, and change the VSS gear for your speedometer to be accurate. Otherwise the 02 trans a direct swap.

As said above by theterminator93...

The EPC solenoid and MLPS needs to stay with the PCM programmed for it.
Later model transmissions switched from wires to a circuit board in the trans and would require a harness repin.
Any 4R70W not from a FN10 or MN12 has an 8 tooth output shaft.

So...
Swap over your EPC and MPLS.
Repin the connector to work with an MN-12 (sticky in here somewhere)
Get a speedo gear for your rear end gears and an 8 tooth output shaft.

For that particular combo, all you need is to repin the connector, and swap the vss gear to the correct one. 96 and 97 cars are easy.

Be aware, tho: At this point, an 02 mustang tranny is going to need a rebuild.

Yes, it will.

However, discussions on converting to a 4R70W in my 1991, turns out that a 02 Mustang V6 4R70W makes a better core to build than, say, a 1992 Crown Vic 4R70W due to the improvements in the design (the 2002 transmission is probably a stouter one than the 1992 one!) Swap to the 94/95 TCC, and use a 94/95 Mustang GT ECU, add the extra four wires, and I should be golden in my 1991! Or so theory hath it ...

(Is on my long term plans; along with a QuarterHorse in the 94/95 Mustang GT ECU to make it tunable and scanable ... )

Yeah, they've added all the stuff back in that they pulled out as too costly, lol.

The 02 has a mech diode, later better seals, and some major redo's on the internal passages and valvebody.

There are upgraded, one piece teflon shaft seals that should last forever; those are the ones that leak and take out the direct clutch.

Ralph, your boys down there in LA is where I've been buying all my stuff; PATC has inner wiring sets and solenoids for the old style, if yours is aging badly.

The guys like Silverfox and Darrin can use up to 05 units, but you have to know what you're doing at that point, and I dont.

The 03 can be used IF it has teeth for the VSS gear; most do not. I save the old tailshafts when I toss a tranny these days.

The disadvantage of the new VB is the missing stiffener plate, right where it wants to drive the 2-3 accumulator thru it.
Sonnax makes an add on for it...

I don't know if it's aging BADLY; at almost 250,000 miles on it, I expect it to be some what creaky and gripey

All the connectors I have are crumbling when I touch them; being able to replace them has a 'comforting feel."

Of course, the later ones don't have wires or connector tabs to bend, so that's another plus. All of my trannys are 02 now.

Gran Marquis and non-police Crown Vics are better sources for trannys; mustangs get beat on, luxobarges do not, lol.

IDK the equivalent non-beaten on car for the SBF pattern, but I'm sure there is one.

I found that modding the cable that disconnects behind the engine, that has the tranny wiring and rear o2 sensors, is the best way to repin it; you can have it out on the table while you try to figure out where pin one is, lol.

I bought one here, and modded it, so it was a plug in swap I handed off to a shop. "Change this, swap this cable."

And if you don't seal the extra holes, it will freak out in wet weather, so be sure to add silicone to seal them, and then fill the connectors with dielectric grease.

Do that; it's harder later, lol.

BTW, I've had a shop give me a discount, for showing them the "Drop the diff and slide the DS back", Tip to make swapping the tranny easy. That saves hours over the book method of dropping the tank, lol.

BTW, guys:

This is what fails and takes out the direct clutch:

It can't hold direct pressure, so the clutch spins, heats up, spins more...

Replacing the scarf cut seals with these one piece seals last years longer.
