transmission interchange question

Hi I joined the club because of the transmission knowledge on here. I have an 94 Mustang GT automatic and I think the transmission is burned up. I found one out of an 96 explorer with and 302/5.0 he said it'll work just have to switch the shift linkage can anyone verify or deny? Thanks in advance

As long as it is a 2WD Exploder, same engine, so same bellhousing bolt pattern, going from a column shift to a floor shift car you might have to swap out the shift shaft, that is correct.

You would be going from an AODE to a 4R70W, so you might need to swap around the extension housing to match the slip yoke.

Might have different number of teeth on the output shaft and speedo might be off, but otherwise should be a direct swap.

There are newer SBF bellhoused 4r70w available, 96 would be better than a "burnt up" AODE, but a 98 and newer would be better. Explorers had them until 2001 (the 5.0). The V8 transmissions are better built but if your rebuilding it then one from some of the V6 vehicles fit as well.

I don't believe the 5.0 explorer ever came in 2wd. I think your best bet would be to get one out of a 99+ V6 mustang.

-91 Cougar LS, coming soon, complete overhaul with a 427" Windsor.
-90 XR7 5-speed black on black w/sunroof, MP2, coated rotors, double intercooler, 15%OD, ported heads, comp stage 1 cam, 85mm TB, 90MM LMAF, 80# injectors, and ported big valve heads
-98 Mark VIII LSC, Procharger P600b, TR3650 swap and 3.73s.
-90 SC Automatic rustbucket winter beater
-97 Tbird Sport 4.6 Nice weather daily driver

That is exactly what it should be, a 96 Explorer 2wd 4r70w. Compare how the shift linkage connects between the two, I think the differences are external, the column shift is above the shaft, and floor shift it is below it. Not only are they different that way, but they have a different amount of movement (one is longer than the other).

so what should I do? There asking $250 for the 4R70W out of the explorer if I was to get an used transmission out of the 99+ v6 mustangs they'll be around $500-$600 if not more I'm sure if I'm going to spend that much why not just rebuild mine with new converter for about the same price?

The 97 has a different case with different exhaust porting. And the 99 will come with the Mechanical doide one way clutch and the better valve body, and the torque converter has better clutches but if you're rebuilding anyways .. I guess you have to balance the cost between getting upgraded parts, and fixing the old one.

96 explorer trans will work fine for you application. probably have to swap the shift lever, but other than that its a direct swap. pull the valve body and Jmod it while you have the pan off.

Rebuilds are not difficult, but you need a stand where you can stand the transmission up to assemble. you also need lip seal protectors, clutch spring compressor and snap ring pliers

Tossing in that reasonably priced (but unknown miles, quality?) 96 that would require a simple change to the shift lever then looking for a better starting point seems like a better idea.

Or starting with it would be better than the 94 for a rebuild.

Question Trans removal with the engine or seperate

I have a 95 Bird Is it less difficult to pull the trans by itself or with the engine? and should I rebuild the original trans or upgrade? Its not broken but the clutches are going out. At 65 my butt hates the creeper.
