4R70W stuck in 2nd

Fresh rebuild, replaced the internal wiring harness. The od light is not flashing. The computer is telling the trans to shift at the right points. But the trans is stuck in second gear. Which tells me the VSS and the shift selector is working and the computer is seeing those items. But the solenoids are not getting the signal or are not working.

When you say you replaced the internal wiring harness, did you change it from the wired version to the newer style plastic version? Or vice versa? Doing so requires repinning the main connector and not doing so will default the trans to second gear as you describe.

I retained the original wiring not the new plastic type.

I didnt replace the shift solenoids. Im thinking this might be the culprit. Is there a way to test function without dropping the trans pan?

Took it to a trans shop that read the codes and told me its not a electronics fault. After spending almost an hour going over everything with the trans tech. Im thinking its something not right with the valve body. I possibly botched the shift kit from transgo or one of the pistons inside the VB stuck. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on this?

So this thread is relevant and useful to others Im going to finalize this with what Im pretty sure the problem is. The transmission rebuilder found a stuck valve in the valve body. He freed it and im going to give it a try tonight. Hopefully this was the only issue.

Stuck in 2nd

I had this exact thing happen when I installed a 2000 mustang 4r70w in my 97 Tbird. I did my own Jmod before installing and repinned my connector. Reverse worked but only 2nd. Turned out the diagram I used for re-pinning was of the socket not the plug meaning it was mirrored from what it should have been. Swapped the pins affected and worked ever since.

I just installed a newer transmission and I have this issue (stuck in second). I performed a re-pin per a diagram found on the site- but something may have still been done wrong. Would an incorrect re-pin issue also cause the line pressure to be high? The car jerks fairly hard when shifting into D and R.

Which diagram did you use?

This one?
https://www.tccoa.com/articles/trann...n/page16.shtml

I used the attached diagram, notice the 1998+ pinouts are inverted(or looking through the back of the connector) on the tccoa article.

This is in my 95 Bird with a new(ish) BCA trans. I used the diagram in the first link. I’ll be checking things over tomorrow. Besides the re-pin- is there anything else I should look for?

Yup. I did the repin wrong. Now everything works great! Thanks for the more clear diagram, skinnytick.
