Lost 1st and 4th

"94 TBird with about 60,000mi and 4.6.

It sat for a week or so while we were on vacation. When I cranked it up, the green O/D off light started blinking and It lost 2 gears. I have driven it that way for a few weeks and the O/D light went off and again works with the button but doesn't affect anything. Over those weeks, my dash cluster has gone bad. I first lost the speedo, it got errractic while driving and stopped. Next the oil pressure gauge quit triggering the check gauges light. The mechanic put a new VSS in it and it read the correct speed signal on his scanner but the speedo would not register. There is also oil pressure and it runs fine. I got a wrecking yard replacement cluster but have not installed it yet. Do you think any of these things are inter-related. I suspect the trans issue is electrical related. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I suspect it's all electrically related..

If you value this car at all, and it's not your only means of transportation..

Then I suggest you stop driving it until you can get this all sorted out..

It sounds like the transmission harness got too hot from the exhaust, and melted..

That'd be my first guess on the transmission issues..

What is the history of the car?..Have you owned it long?..Did you buy it with issues?..Have you ran the CarFax?..Is it a flood car?

No, this is a car with documented low mileage and service records, Carfax confirmed the history. We got it from the original owner who got too old to continue driving it. It hasn't been wrecked or damaged other than a few body dings tht were done as the owner aged. We originally got it for my granddaughter a couple of years ago and she drove it to high school for her last 2 years. after that, she could no longer afford to maintain a car in college and I didn't want to lose I nice car like that, so I acquired it. the interior and paint are in nice condition and all maintenance has been done. It drives nicely and this problem has come on rather suddenly. We live in the rust free high desert of L.A. County. It passed smog with no problems and the engine performs in a lively manner.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check the wiring issue and hopefully I'll get the gauge cluster installed in the next few days.

I'd look the car over; being as it happened suddenly when the car sat, and then got worse, makes me think something ate some of the insulation off some wires somewhere, then shorts started.

Do a visual inspection under the car, on stands.

Look for places animals can get to carefully.

They can get inside easily behind the front door; you can usually see some of the noise padding pulled down if somethings been around there.

Check the rubber drains/grommets; they eat those and get in.

This happened to a girl I know; they live in the sticks...
