Question AOD with 4R70W gearset

I am looking at putting the 4R70W internals into an AOD case. This appears to be a popular upgrade - I believe it can be done without using a transmi$$ion shop.

What I have:
AOD from 1988 Mustang (blown front seal - clutches toast)
4R70W from a rolled 1996 Explorer (cheap!!)
(This is for a 91 Sport with a 302)

What I don't know is what do I have to keep from the AOD?

Case - The Explorer had a 5.0 (no, I didn't get the intake, TB, or heads)
Input shaft?
Valve body - the Explorer one is electronic.
Anything else??

What I would like is a relatively inexpensive, improved AOD.

I've seen several references to this particular build-up, but nothing really specific about which parts to retain. (I have read the Tech articles, and been over to SCCoA, and numerous other sites). As far as I can tell - I'll figure it out once they are apart, but I could REALLY use a headstart!!!

Thanks,
Mike

I put the 4R70W gears in my aod when I built it and I didn't have to get
any special parts in order for it to fit...

However, I should mention that I had a tranny shop put it all together...

I you want info in what I put in check out www.mn12racing.com
and click on mods..

There you find my parts list and a complete list on upgrades that are available..
for example mechanical diode and so on..

You'll still want a reverse drum/mechanical diode from a 98+ trans, that roller one-way version will fail. Get the spiral lock ring from makco to go with it.

96 Mustang GT 5spd. w/ 248A Option (GTS). Stock for now until I get the Roush on.

97 Thunderbird 4.6L LX /w Sport Package
24k B&M Cooler, 1" lowered, Steeda UD Pulleys, Dynomax cat-back, J-mod, 3.73's, PI intake, PI cams, 03 GT MAF/Tube, SCT tuned - Gone but not forgotten.

Is the roller really that bad? I figured it HAD to be better than the stock AOD garbage.

I'll look into locating a cheap source - junkyard or parts house (for the mechanical diode). The spiral lock is not OEM, is it?

Thanks for the link - you've spent more on your tranny than I have on my car!!

Actually - yes, there are more parts for sale. I'll have to check on the Cam Sensor and harness. I was not able to get the engine (or GT40 intake or GT40 heads) My buddy did! I know the tan leather Eddie Baur interior needs to go - its in the way!!

Thanks for the tips.

This is what happens to the roller one-way clutches:

AODE's and a good number of 4R70W's got the same garbage AOD roller clutch. Some later taxi CV's got a 14 roller version instead of the 7 roller, but it didn't seem to make much difference. I added the MD to my CV's AODE when I rebuilt it, it added about $100 to the cost but I consider it well spent for the piece of mind. The snap ring was from www.bulkpart.com

Well... If you ad shipping, taxes and a rebuild cost of $650
I think it ended up costing me around 2400 bucks...

Ouch! That must have made a nice sound when it broke...

Learning from someone else's experience is definately cheaper. I will heed your advice!! Thanks for the link - I have done business with them in the past. My dad-in-law and I upgraded a couple AOD's to the specs listed on the SCCoA (that one really long AOD thread between mike38 and duanemyre).

Unfortunately, after I installed the shift kit, the front seal blew out within 75 miles. It may have been because I was rompin it pretty hard....nah!!!
