Question on AOD - AOD-E/4R70W

Ok sorry but ya I'm a newb and I'm not 100% sure this belongs in the newb section or not so try not to burn me too bad

From everything I've read so far I have the "old" AOD transmission which is known to have "problems" I started searching for transmission info in the forums and I believe I've confused myself as much as I've cleared things up.

Is the AOD-E/4R70W a TOTALY DIFFERENT TRANNY then the AOD?

If so is it one that is easily found or purchased to be used incase mine goes or I simply want to "upgrade"? And also if so is it worth it?

Now I saw in some places it was more or less put as a 4R70W modification to the current old AOD. Is that more or less doing the new tranny with the old block or is it the gears?

My biggest worry is that my trans will go soon *especialy with my crazy driving* and I don't wanna be stuck without a clue what to do. This car has its original trans, 123k+ miles now, and the tv cable gromit was broken for a short period of time, the car would basicly not shift to a larger gear if you "floored it" but would slowly shift to the appropriate gears.

*braces for the impact*

they are both totally different animal.

aod is control by cable and no electronics. aode and 4r70w is electronic control tranny. some people use the gearset from 4r70w into aod because of the gearing advantage but aod even with 4r70w gearset are still being control by cable/mechanical.

that i'll have to let the expert chime in. the 4r70w you can use is from v6 mustang and some of the trucks and i'm almost sure a custom length driveshaft is needed.

but how to control the tranny with your ecu i have no idea though.

wait till some expert chime in before you start buying stuff ok?

To use a 4R70W, you'd have to convert to a '94-95 Mustang GT or 5.0 Explorer EEC or use a standalone controller.

the TC lockup functions are "Lacking" but other than that the controller is very easy to work with. just make sure you adjust the line pressure settings with a gauge connected, this way you can be sure you don't fry the transmission.

I converted my 93 5.0 TBird to use a 4R70W. I'm using a 95 Mustang GT EEC. I am familiar with Baumann's software and there is no comparison to the level of control offered by the GT EEC. I guess it works, but it essentially turns a 4R70W into a very nice AOD. The EEC conversion is not hard - I don't remember all of the details.

you could just rebuild your AOD and use the 4R70W gearset.

It all depends on how much cash you want to spend. You could build a mild aod with a 4r70w gearset but the costs mount quickly when trying to make it durable.

The best bet would be a 4r70w with a custom stall converter, 94 stang computer and a chip to make it shift right. Or the baumann would be cheaper than a chip and computer swap + alot easier. Otherwise it might cost as much to upgrade an aod.

I have about $1100 dollars in my aod in parts alone!!!!! that's just plain crazy when I could've had a computer shift for me for that much dough.

I love my aod now but a lockup converter with a 4r70w would be nicer with gas prices like they are.

What if any are the advantages in AODE over an AOD? The least amount of electronics the better I like it.

DOH, is that what the E stands for? I thought it meant Extreme. So what are the advantages of an AODE over an AOD trans?

The AODE is an Early Model 4r70w..

So, its technically a WEEK 4r70w w/AOD Gearing..

Ford standerdized its Transmission Naming.

way off topic, but the new 2006 Crown Vic/Grand Marquis get a 4R75E, I know the 4 is forward gears, R is rear wheel drive, and the 75 is torque handling capabilities, but the E now stands for? It is sealed and has lifetime fluid

Quote:
The 4R75E is an evolution of the 4R70E that is used in the current F-150. The biggest changes are a faster computer, redesigned toque converter, addition of a turbine-speed sensor, "smart" shift control unit, and a fully sealed case filled with lifetime transmission fluid.

Well, the W in 4R70W meant that it has a wide-ratio gearset.
