4r70w apart

finaly disasembled the tranny out of my 95 tbird. i found the 1-2 shift acumulater spring was broke in half,on further inspection i found that the direct drive clutches were burt up ,did the broke spring cause this ? or do i have two seperate problems?where is this one way diode thing at in these trannys?what do they look like?best place you guys have found to get rebuild kits and parts for them ?

Sorry but that tranny is pretty much junk. You will need to replace too many parts to just fix it and even then it will be more weak than it was when new. If the direct clutches burnt up you will need to replace the direct drum with them.
There is no mechanical diode in that transmission. There is a one way roller clutch and that is what the intermediate clutches(the big ones in the front of the tranny) go around. It attaches to the front of the reverse drum.

darrin ,
i know its junk, you know its junk butt just for jhits and shiggles lets just say that for some odd reason you find urself rebuilding this tranny(for the sake of argument im doing it to practice)what would you replace execpt for the case and valvebody components,i will be doing the jmod and jerrys shift improver ?
what tranny do i need to look for in the junkyard that would be a good starting point for a rebuild?
can you get me all of the parts ?
i found a tranny for 800 shipped that would go in a 1999 mustang ... is this a good starting platform?
it took me all of 20 mins to fully tear the tranny down now it looks to me as if it is just a simple to put back together as it was to tear down. right or wrong?
thanks
mike

So you have all the clutch pistons and everything apart then? I don't mean the plates, I mean the pistons removed from each drum. Those would be the direct, the forward and the reverse. You need a clutch spring compressor for that job. Then you need lip seal protectors to put them back together.
It comes apart a lot easier when you don't do all that. With any type of failure or with a transmission of that age you absolutely must do all of that to clean all the hidden stuff and replace all the seals. Sounds to me like you just gutted it. If so, you are about 1/50th the way there. I can take one down and slam it back together in less than half an hour I think. Thats the easy part. Properly rebuilding it is the hard part. But I guess it depends if you hack it or if you are as meticulous as I am.
You still have to replace that direct drum if the clutch plates burnt the lining off of themselves. That means the drum was overheated in the process and will be distorted. You also need to get a complete bearing kit.
Then there are the bushings...

Yup, that one will be fine. I don't know where to tell you to get the parts because you have to have an account everywhere I get my stuff.
