4R70W Forward Clutch

Who makes a 7 plate clutch for a year 2000 4R70W automatic transmission?

Thanks.

Trans parts...

I hate to hijack a thread, but my question is kinda related...

Does anyone sell a parts kit to take a 4R70W to jmod specs, with the mech diode, and everything else needed, so I can do the upgrade myself?

I don't have the tools to assemble the clutches, as I understand it, as it required special tools to do some of the work.

Or is this a really stupid question, as the part kit would be all the hard work of doing the transmission, and leaving only the gravy part for me? (assembling the pieces)

Would this kit cost the same as buying a rebuilt jmod from dirtydog or darrin?

also, for a daily driver, should I find a new core to rebuild, or do my stock '96?

thanks.

I have filled these request several times. It is considerably cheaper to build the transmission yourself, but then the liability for it functioning is all yours. What is the code on your 96 transmission case, I would likely suggest a later model case. As far as assembling the transmission being gravy, well to me it is. It only takes one part out of place or upside down to quickly ruin every part inside the case.

Gravy...

Alan, I know what you mean about one misplaced part ruining the whole soup...

The first engine I rebuilt (Dirt bike, ~1977), I had one washer left over. I didn't yet know the importance of NOT having pieces left over, and , luckily didn't break anything when it stuck in 6th, in the middle of BF, with no downshift.

As soon as I can get a later core, I'm going to get with you on a kit; I believe I can assemble it correctly.

The stuff I usually deal with is much smaller, and just as complex... working with wrenches instead of tweezers and magnifiers is a blast, comparatively. (I do electronics work; everything from 0402 resistors to multi-horsepower positioner systems. At least I can see these parts.

If I take one apart, I can get it back together. I have the helm manuals, as backup.

I realize there are several different cores that will work, and I've read all the articles, as well as most of the advice you have given out; and as I understand it, the mustang 99-02, or non-police crown vic or marauder tranny 99-? is the core I want. are these pretty much the same, or is there a core that will save me a bunch of time and effort?

I'm going to get one from a boneyard, and I can't see just putting one in without modding it, just for longevity; but is this (not rebuilding it) a viable option for a low milage core from the newer cars? (for a daily driver with no mods)

The one I have in my red car is at 190k miles, leaks from the rear seal, and only acts up if I haven't added fluid lately; If these are the bad ones... I thought (for about 10 seconds) about repairing the rear seal, and probably the bushing, but I can't see dropping something with 190k and not replacing the whole thing...

Maybe I'll be able to get in on the next GP, and all this will be moot...

Thanks for the help!

what gears you are running and how much power you are making may be the deciding factor in what core to use.

The one I'll be replacing first has a 3.08 non-locker diff. (replaced a 3.27 NL as part of a drive shaft swap. 99% of my driving is interstate highway.)

The engine I end up with will be an exlporer swap, but right now, a 190k 96 NPI motor. The tranny still had the plug in it when I changed the tranny fluid at 130k. (right after I bought it.)

I'm not planning on any major mods; IMHO, the more you tweak, the easier it breaks.

When I find a car I wont hate to blow up, I'll build something nice.

I really wish these were as easy to mod as the 63 tbird my dad gave me in high school. I still can't believe I sold that car...

Alan, do you think the core I have is good enough for the kinda driving I do?

I havent had a chance to crawl under to see the tag yet, I'm doing oil this weekend, I'll know then.

It depends on which core it is I wouldn't stick much money into a early style core.
