A friend is looking at a 98 conv. and it has an auto. When did Ford start improving the 4R70W? I was thinking that 98 was mechanical diode, any other improvements?

They started using better clutch material in 98 as well as the mechanical diode. Its not a bad transmission at all. There are improved versions for sure, but 98 is where they started to get much better.
