4r70w swap into coupe

First off this is a question about swapping a 4r70w into my 93 5.0 mustang. Please don't hate, I also got a 86 tbird, but this is the only site that seems to know what there talking about on the 4r70w. I have bauminator for a 97-older 4r70w I have a 94 aode that I'm going to steal for the necessary sensors swap for the bauman to work with a 98-up trans. I'm bewteen using a 3.8 from a 99-up mustang or just getting a 4r70w from a 2000-up 4.2 f150 sense there about the same size. Does the 4.2 need any changes besides the tailshat swapped? Does anyone have the software that comes with the bauminator? The guy I can get one from cheap had a shop do a tune and ended up screwing him and they still have the software and we can't get it back. Thanks for helping a mustang. Matt

That's why he is talking about using a 4R from a V6. Since a V8 tranny will be better (unless you are rebuilding anyway) you can use one from an Explorer 5.0. I am not sure what year they started using the 4R though.

yeah but its easier to find one from a 4.2 which is just as strong as the 5.0 explorers which are much harder to find.

The V-8 version has an extra intermediate clutch.

i know the 3.8 has one less clutch but I could've sworn the 4.2 has the same cluthes as the v8.

now I know the explorer transmissions are natorius for dieing. Are the 4r70w's in the 5.0s not the trans that like to die?

thats the first ive heard. A transmission that "is notorious" can be chalked up to many different reasons, not maintaining clean fluid, driving style, inadequate cooling, etc....

Obvisously, if you were to set this up as a performance application, one would ensure a deep sump pan is used, run a large cooler, j-mod it, make sure it has Mercon V. Also, I would find the cheapest 5.0 4R70W I could find and of course overhaul it with new seals, gaskets, and friction materials.

I believe it is the 55RE that are the problem trannys. I have a '97 Mountaineer with a 5.0/4R70W with 190,000 on it & it's never been touched.

The 4.2 truck transmissions have the same clutches as a V8. At least the one I robbed the guts from did. I've read on here the 3.8 valvebody is more suitable to jmod.

i'm just going to go with a 3.8 one. I can get some with less than 30k miles on it for $300. The 3.8 will be strong enough for what I got now and if it starts to go I'll rebuild it and stil be ahead of what the 4.2 or 5.0 ones cost
