What Gears?

Hey friends I did my 5.0 5spd swap into the 96 bird and I'm wandering what gears I should go with. Right now I have the stock 96 v6 gears in it. I plan on doing a decent amount of highway "65-70". Also on the same note I would like to take it to the strip and I want to pulls some good numbers so again what gears for that?

It's going to depend a lot on what 5 speed transmission we're talking about here.

Have you tried driving it with the 3.27's you currently have in it? I'd recommend sticking with 3.08's or 3.27's, and I definitely wouldn't go any lower (higher numerically) than 3.55's, as first gear would become worthless.

When I rebuild my pumpkin I will also switch from 3.27s to the 3.31s gear set that I have kicking around.

if you run the 5spd with 4.10s and IF you ever run a turbo... boost will be very delayed. Turbos like load

I have an early model M5R2 trans and 3.08s plenty of pep down low and i turn 2k rpm at 70. I sorced my entire pumpkin from a mark viii, its aluminum too. I had the 3.27s and didnt like how short 1st gear was. IMHO 3.08s are a very good compromise between available torque and highway driveability. I cant even imagine 4.10's with a 3.75 first gear, ick. v8 5 speeds rock by the way.

yeah, but when your first gear is 2.46, 4.10's are great!

but this is irrelevant to the thread anyway..

3.08's

Hello

I have a set of 3.08's out. not much use for them. $10.00 + S&H
I must check them first. They are from a 95 8.8 with a V8

I run 3.90's in mine, (8.8). I also have 4.10's & 3.73's(7.5)

4.10's were alittle too high with my engine. She ran out or floated @ 5600--5800rpm. Varied with the lap.

I need over 6000rpm.

Damn Paul I would get them from you but I only have a 7.5 in my bird right now. Know anyone getting rid of an 8.8?

Leave the 3.27s in there, and change your tach to one from a V8 car. You aren't turning anywhere close to 3K at 70 with an M5R2 and 3.27s. In fact you are turning around 2200. The way the tach works is it counts the ignition pulses. With a V8, for every one engine revolution, the ignition pulses 8 times instead of the 6 that it used to. Since there are more pulses of the ignition, the tach thinks the engine is turning faster by 33% (8/6=1.3333333) so it reads 33% faster.

You're right, I wasn't thinking. My point remains the same though.

Some can and some can't. I know the one I pulled out of an 89XR7 parts car didn't have the extra tab to ground out. I had to switch it with one out of a different cluster.

true, but as long as he started w/ an NA car, he should be able to switch it.
