I'm about to purchase an 8.8 aluminum trak-lok diff. but I have to buy the gears yet. I'm wondering if I should be concerned about the amount of splines with the pumpkin or the gears? I have a 94 Bird 4.6 and the pumpkin is out of a Mark VIII. Will this fit or do they have to be 28 splines? I'm confused about the spline thing. please help.

When you say "gears" - that usually means the ring and pinion.

The 28 spline refers to the side gears in the differential. The ring gear bolts to the differential.

Went on Summit to look for ring and pinion for 8.8 Mark VIII Aluminum diff. and I'm not sure which ones to order. I want 3.55 ratio but I'm not sure which ones I should order. I'm putting the diff. in my 94 Bird 4.6. some say 31 spline some say 28, I'm not really knowlegable on differentials.

ring and pinion have nothing to do with the axle spline count. Any normal rotation 8.8 ring and pinion will work.

as far as axle spline count, the carrier, either an open, a trac-loc, or some other type of locker, that is when you have you worry about spline count, and you need 28.

the side gears in the carrier for IRS rears have a bevel since the axles have a snap ring. If the carrier you use doesn't have that bevel then it can be nearly impossible to remove the axles again if the snap ring is left in place. Some just leave it off, but that doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

If you are also getting a new carrier that is something you need to take into consideration. I think all current trac-locs sold by FRPP have the correct side gears (the IRS ones work for solid axles also).

I would go with 3.73's but its your car. I think you will need to get a install kit and a different speedo gear. They have a good price on 4.10's and I might have to pick up a set.

If you are not sure what gears you want you probably want to talk to someone like Teeps for a complete differentail you can swap in. Changing the gears is not a amateur task. No offense intended ,but you don't want to build a differential yourself unless you really know how.

FWIW 3.73's are a great street gear for our cars, anything more requires use of a speed calibration device.
