Whinning Noise from Diff

What would cause a constant whinning noise from the differential - Stock 1997 3.8L with Traction Control.

Had a friend of mine put it on a lift, started it up, put it in drive and the noise is definetly coming from Pumpkin.

Checked the fluid and it is ok - would maybe changing it out with synthetic help out and if so what type. I just picked the car up and have no manual on it.

Thanks for any help

3rd bird I have owned

3rd - 97 3.8L - happy to have one back.

how many miles are on the car?

when you say checked the fluid, did you check to see if it was full, or the actual condition of the fluid?

Do you know the service history of the car? Has anybody worked on the diff before? Usually whining is due to an improper installation of the gears.

130,000 miles. for now just checked the level of the fluid, not the condition. I have no idea of past maint. I bought it off someone who just graduated college and did not want to take the car home with them.
