Brand new gears might whine a bit. You need someone experienced to say if it's typical, or too much (no, I'm not that person!)

After all, there's no wear on them, so they've never worn in a matching surface patch ...

If it continues after 500 miles I would take it to the shop, if you used non OEM gears deal with it, you bought cheap junk and that is your reward. If you used OEM gears and they are noisy past 500 miles they were not set correctly.

I have installed dozens of those, the last 3 whined like a dumptruck, deal with it or swap in OEM gears. 2 years ago the yukon gears were OEM, they are not anymore and they won't even give you a pinion measurement to figure them. At least motive does that.

Yeah I gotta feeling I'm gunna have 2 go raise hell at this shop.. I just had a local mechanic I know say that they r either gunna whine after oil circulation or be quiet. And Jerry (91bluecoupe) said after his 3.73s were installed his didn't whine at all.... I'm getting more pi$$ed as the minutes go by..

It isn't their fault. I raised hell with Randy's Ring and pinion. After talking to them on the phone I will never purchase their junk gears again. Bill is unfortunately a victim of the deal they made to replace their quality OEM gears with cheap chinese junk. The only person it saved money was Randy's because their price didn't drop and they didn't say anything about it. At one time I thought they had the best gears around, but they also had the ford logo on them. The new gears look like junk.

I put Richmond 3:73's in my stock TL and there is a slight whine around 40 but quiets down after that. It's not THAT noticeable, but slightly louder than the OEM 3:27's I had.

Jamie,

I hope they quiet down for you after some miles.

Just will have to turn the radio up louder or make your exhaust as loud as mine. LOL

Patience is a virtue. Wait it out on the 500 mile mark. If it is still whining, call a nationally known company for your next order or find a good used set. It may not be brand new but at least it will be new to you. I knew a guy that had put 3.73's into a camaro and they whined for over 5000 miles and he said he traded the car off cause of it. Of course, he was an idiot and the next owner called him up and griped him out for 2 hours over destroying the rearend of the car by installing the gears himself and doing them all wrong and then lying about it.

How much were these Yukon gears? I never heard of them.. I disagree about going with used gears. Its just too expensive to keep switching these out. Hopefully it will either settle down or you can convince the garage to put in FRPP gears instead. Look on ebay, they aren't that expensive.

I got the gears from SCP. Yukon is the gears Bill provides. And yeah ur right, having these things swapped out is not cheap at all. In between buying the TL unit, gears, the rebuild kit, labor, blah blah... Was a big hurtin in the wallet I can say that..

I know what you mean! I did the same thing in the Spring this year. I paid a lot for getting it setup and buying the Trak-lok. I was lucky on a few things, I got my gears for $75 including shipping. I rooked the guy on Ebay. LOL. Its all worth it though!

Bill seems like a nice guy, give him a call and see what you can work out.

If set up properly, no they should not wine.
and if they are not set up properly 500 miles can do a lot of damage.
did you do the proper brake in? drive a short drive check for heat let cool and repeat several times? is it making any excessive heat, that is one of the indicators for a problem in the setup. wrong pinion depth can cause a whine, after 500 miles if it is still whining make sure if you have it taken apart, look at the gears, a wrong pinion depth can sharpen the edge of the pinion gear teeth at the end of the gear, it needs to be wairing in the midle of the teeth.

Knowing what I know I don't think it makes a difference if the setups is off or perfect. The last set I took apart way too many times to get it perfect and they still made noise. The next day I did a set of OEM gears on the third try from scratch and they are deadly silent.

and if they are not set up properly 500 miles can do a lot of damage.
did you do the proper brake in? drive a short drive check for heat let cool and repeat several times? is it making any excessive heat, that is one of the indicators for a problem in the setup. wrong pinion depth can cause a whine, after 500 miles if it is still whining make sure if you have it taken apart, look at the gears, a wrong pinion depth can sharpen the edge of the pinion gear teeth at the end of the gear, it needs to be wairing in the midle of the teeth.
Yep... I done the proper break-in procedure. I was extra careful with everything I done and how i drove along with my mph..
