Ford 8.8 IRS Questions

I have a friend on another forum that knows I have a Thunderbird and PMed me some questions about the differentials in our cars, however I dont really know the answers to most of them but I figure most of you guys probably do. Here's the PM:

Do you have any decent pics of the pumpkin by itself?

Also, do you know of any years that had an aluminum pumpkin as well as stub shafts to bolt axles to, rather than splined axle ends that insert into the diff? If there were none, is it possible to swap parts over to get this setup?

This is what I mean - http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g41/addaea/4361_1.jpg

I need those diff output flanges with the lighter aluminum case. The IRS 8.8 should survive with around 600hp at the wheels, right?
Hopefully you guys can help us.

The aluminum pumpkin came on all MarkVIII's, as well as the 99-04 cobras. I wasn't aware of anyone making a stub shaft conversion, but evidently someone did because that diff in the link is an 8.8 out of an MN12. Whatever it is, it has to be aftermarket because it was never factory installed by ford.

Outside of the half-shafts, there isn't a whole lot of difference between IRS and a live axle. After a certain year, all 8.8 rears had beveled side gears (I'm not sure of what year). Older 8.8" Ford rear ends side gears are not beveled at an angle for easy removal of the half shafts.

There are also two different spline counts for the axles, 28 and 31 spline.

I'm not sure I'm getting the question I guess. Cause the more I read the OP's first post, I'm realizing I'm way off for what he's asking. lol

I'll let someone with more experience with the pic he posted give some answers. Sorry.

As for the 600hp mark, there are plenty of Cobra's with more HP than that running with the IRS rear.

Anyone know what year this bevel started? I am getting a carrier from a 94-98 mustang. Not sure of the year. And if it has the beveled gears already that would save me some money and time. How can I tell if the gears have the appropriate bevel or not?

Thank you
Mark

That's too early. They need machining.

The change was this millennium sometime. Not sure when, but I only heard about it in the last couple of years.

I am going with the easy solution, send my side gears to dirtydogracing and get them machined

I'm confused, I thought 94-98 Mustangs all came with solid rear axles.

If I were to take a wild guess I'd say those stubs are from a GTO

You are correct. The actual 8.8 differential works in both solid and IRS setups though.
