wanting 3:55. Donor car?

For my 97. Bird. 4.6l auto tranny, Is there any car that provides a direct swap of differential non posi 3:55 or must I buy the gears for installation in my unit? Tccoa article gives nice chart to the ratio codes...Thanks. KF4sign. (Warren)

Buy the gears.

Check out the ads in rags such as "Muscle Mustang and Fast Fords" - I find several that list the Ford Racing and Performance Parts (FRPP) gears for right under $150 (149 to 149.95).

Installation kits are also inexpensive - shucks, Tommy Vaughn Performance lists the TracLoc for $200, the big installation kit for $85, and the gears for $150. I make that as under $500 even with shipping for a complete upgrade. And with that, you can grab a MN12 diff out of a U-Pull-It or Pick-A-Part yard to rebuild while driving.

IF you DO find one that was already done in the yard, be SURE to grab the VSS so you have the right gear for it! If not, the gears are also available - there's one place about 4 miles from my house (!!).

I don't think any IRS TBird came with 3.55 gears, maybe an 87-88 Turbo Coupe - I'm not sure.

Thanks for advice on the VSS...does this mean the color coded gear into the transmission or is there more to it?

The color coded gear - but if you find a doner car, grab the whole VSS so you don't have to swap just the gear.

IIRC, you can also get the gears from an Explorer 8" rear diff but the diff itself isn't interchangable.

Or you could just bolt up the whole thing. As long as it isnt 03+ (31 spline)

I love my V8, but I'd love it more if all 8 cylinders worked. (they do now)

01s are 31 spline too, and only 03/04 Cobras used 3.55s. 99/01 Cobras use 3.27s

You are correct...so will 3.55 gears from a 2003 terminator work on the tbird pumpkin? a buddy of mine has his stock gears that i want to use on mine...my 3.73s are too steep for my 5 speed...and my stock 3.27s arent that fun
