4.00 rear end?

Anyone ever heard of a 4.00 rear end? I’m looking at buying a 96 t bird Allen supercharged and guy is telling me the rear end tag says 4.00 and he and a bunch of gear heads are baffled. It’s a 8.8 rear end, car is really clean and can get it for $3500

I have never heard of an even 4:1 rear gear. I have to say that the tag was read wrong, see if he can send you a picture. I may be wrong, but I want to know if this is a thing.

As for if you should get the car; YES. Get it and take care of it.

I know of 4.10 and 3.90 for 8.8 differentials but not a 4.00:1

Yeah he said he would send me a picture but it's lowered so hard to get one. He's been straight up with me. Said he bought it from a dude who suckered him into buying it. A week after he bought it, tranny went out and tranny came out of a Ford Windstar according to his research. He put a 113,000 mile 97 police Crown Vic motor and tranny in it. Sent me a video of it cranking up and it's turn key. He said no codes, lights, etc. He's done all the work himself and has sent me pictures of the swap and all, so I have no reason to doubt him about 4:00 rear, and he said both tires spin....so who knows. He said he and a bunch of gear heads he knows have all looked at it and have no idea lol.

I think it's BS, personally.

The door tag will not say 4.00, and an aftermarket gear won't come with a tag, so the statement about the tag is BS.

A windstar only has a 6-cylinder engine, so that seems off, unless it had a 6 cylinder engine in it originally.

Or it may be why it failed so soon, there are less plates in them.

Get and post a picture of the Door tag on the driver's side; that will fix all the speculation.

A picture of the underhood tag would be good too.

If he tells you he can't do that, he's full of shit.

Also ask who wrote the tune for it.

I would go buy a steering wheel, so you can "steer clear" of that one.

Its clear the owner of the car doesn't know jack shit. As was stated, there was no factory 4.0 rear, so there can be no tag to say 4.0. Also a Windstar was a front wheel drive minivan, so there is no possible way to bolt the trans from one up to a 4.6 in a t-bird. His complete lack of knowledge doesn't necessarily mean don't buy it, but check the car out yourself, don't believe anything he is telling you, and figure that you will likely have to re-do everything he has touched.

I wouldn't even trust a tag at this point. The only way to be sure without opening the diff is to carefully count driveshaft revolutions vs wheel revolutions.

Yeah I'm going to check it out first before buying. He's been pretty thorough in answering any question I have. Asked for a video of it running and within 5 minutes he sent me a video of him cranking it up and popping the hood. The problem is I think the guy he bought it from isn't sure what all he did to it. He's sent me pics of the swap and everything so who knows. I'll get to the bottom of it. I'll ask for tonight for the hood tag and door jam tag.

I think the problem is the guy who had the car before him really seemed to build it up "more than it was" and he's found all this out by trial and error. He's volunteered that information so I feel he's being pretty straight forward. He's already responded when I asked him about the fuel injectors.

Looking at both tags:

It's a Ford ( Thunderbird (TH) with a 4.6 (Code W) and 4R70w transmission (TR L) , Standard V8 springs (33GG), Standard 4 wheel disks (BRK 1), Black interior (B22), was built on 6/19/1996, Paint is Pacific Green (PS), Has manual heater controls, and a 3.27 non-locking rear diff, unless it's been changed.

The spoiler is not original, it would say SPLR on the core tag.

It was delivered to Region 27, Which is Cincinnati, OH.

Well interior is grey leather but I agree with you on all the other stuff. I wish it was black! Thanks for the info

Wait I thought a full black interior wasnt an option on the 94-97 interior?

Find me a 96-97 with anything other than 3.27s and I'll show you a unicorn farting gold bricks. The tag info is only useful in fuguring out if it's a trac-lok or open. Gear ratios themselves are a given if they weren't changed.

he claims both wheels spin and no single wheel peel so it had to have been changed. I just don’t know what. I don’t think the guy I’m buying the car from would make up a tag being there especially knowing I’m going to look at it. Maybe 4.00 tag means something else?

If it's locking, the tag will say XLXX.

Lazarus says 3L27; Ive never looked at the others.

A 4.00 would say 4L00. I'll bet you a coke it doesn't say that.

Pix, or it didn't happen.

Who did the car come from originally? I think We've seen that car...

When you are at 50MPH in 3 rd gear ( 3rd because its 1:1), what rpm are you at? 2000? 2500? What size tires do you have?
