Ford tops 2 million vehicles in 2011
Ford brand returns to pre-recession sales level; 2 million vehicles sold this year
Ford Motor Co. received a belated Christmas present this week.
The Dearborn-based automaker says its Ford brand this week topped 2 million U.S. sales for the first time since 2007.
“Ford’s lineup of high-quality, fuel-efficient cars, utilities and trucks continues to attract more and more new customers,” said Erich Merkle, the automaker’s sales analysis manager.
According to Ford, the milestone makes the brand the bestselling in America and the first to hit the 2 million mark since the recession that drove crosstown rivals General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC into bankruptcy.
“With gasoline prices tracking higher than last year, customers continue to move toward smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, whether they are passenger cars or utilities,” Merkle said.
Overall, Ford brand small cars are on pace to post an increase of more than 20 percent this year. Ford brand utilities are tracking to post more than a 30 percent gain, particularly thanks to the Escape having a record sales year.
However, the heavyweight of the brand – the F-Series – is the true leader of the pack with more than 510,000 pickups sold through November.
Ford expects its success to continue into 2012. Officials say nearly one-third of its vehicles in the U.S. are expected to get 40 miles per gallon or more in 2012.
