It’s hard to understate the impact this engine has had on Ford’s lineup over the past twenty years. There’s the Crown Victoria, the Mercury Cougar, the F-series, the E-Series, two generations of Mustang… The list goes on

Haha, Cougars got mentioned, not Thunderbirds

Bittersweet nonetheless, had a good 23 year run.

Interesting..

Well..It had a nice run..Let's see how long the "new" 5.0 lasts before Ford replaces that too..

Considering the 4.6L is now defunct..I guess it's as much of a dinosaur as my 5.0 pushrod engine huh?..

I guess it makes sense. They're killing the E-series after this model year ends and the 4.6 really only goes in those anymore...

ahh well...I had three of them over the years, and while they are fantastic engines....they really, really are....the new 5.0 is such a nice leap forward in every way....My only complaint, and this is evident in some of those facebook comments on that article...people seem to think that the new coyote 5.0, and the old vanilla ice 5.0 are the same thing, saying things like "the 5.0 was ford's best engine, I'm really glad they brought it back"

While I like how bulletproof these engines have been in the various cars I've owned with them installed...I reeeeeally wish Ford would have kept the 'cam-in-block' arrangement, ala' Chebby LS.

The stupid-huge engine dimensions have relegated this engine series to the scrap bin of history.

I'm not terribly impressed with this engine, either.

Yeah, in that both the 4.6 DOHC and new 5.0 are both stupidly complex, and don't fit in much of anything without serious modifications.

So yeah, I bought two Lincolns in a week.

That's probably because even though we don't, Ford(and the general public) considered those to be a general failure.(the MN-12 Thunderbird with the 4.6, of course!)

Has anyone found an approximation of how many 4.6 modular engines were produced?
I'm curious how that stacks up against the 5.0 (which was produced for FAR longer).
I'm sure more 5.0s were made BUT how many more?

I dunno, look at this list of cars with the 4.6:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Modular_engine

So, they made the 5.0 from 1969-1993. They made the 4.6 from 1991-2014. Although it appears there were more 5.0's made, I personally would not bet money on it.

I may be out in left field, but my money is on the Crown Vic Police Interceptor run from 1992-2011 pushing the 4.6 to the win. That is a LOT of cop cars with a 4.6 in it. How many cop cars had a 302 in it back in the day? They used to use big motors for cop cars.

The 5.0 was made until 2001 in Explorers, I'm pretty sure the 302 displacement was introduced in 67 or 68 as well, 1969 seems awfully late.

I was going by the 93 Mustang being the last one. That was the same 5.0 in 2001?

Yes, either 67 or 68 changed from the 289 to the 302. Oh well, still a lot of 4.6's!
