how do i go about doing that ? im not worried about emissions becuase maine doesnt do emmision tests. also my muffler has a hole in it , so i was hoping that punching out the cats and putting a new and better muffler on there id get better mpg , sound and power. what muffler would you guys reccomend ? needs to be something cheap. thanks
Cut off the cat, take a prybar or long screwdriver and start breaking up the honeycomb material inside the cat. Once it is all broken up and you have dumped it all out, weld the shell of the cat back up in place.
replace them with a pipe the open space will cuase the gas to expand and take power. do more reseach about thermal expansion first plus it sounds kinda goofy
so is there any benifits or disadvantages of doing this ? and i cant just replace the cat with a pipe , or it wont pass inspection , the car has to "have" a cat on
Honestly, your best bet would be to just get some high flow cats and have them welded on. You can get the cats for probably about $60 each, and then you don't lose any power, and you don't have to worry about any inspection no matter what.
If you do gut them make sure to not breath in any of the lingering dust.
